About us

Welcome to RCNS!

The Richmond Cooperative Nursery School (RCNS) has been a cornerstone of the Richmond Village community since 1975, providing a nurturing and educational environment for young children. As a non-profit cooperative preschool, RCNS is licensed by the Ministry of Education under the Child Care and Early Years Act and undergoes annual inspections to ensure compliance with ministry regulations.

Our Mission

At RCNS, our mission is to support children in developing the essential skills needed for a successful transition to junior kindergarten. We emphasize a play-based learning approach, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning in a safe and inclusive setting.

Our Cooperative Model

As a cooperative nursery school, RCNS is wholly owned and operated by our parent members. An Executive Committee, composed of parents (past and present) and staff, is elected or appointed annually. The Executive is responsible for the nursery school’s day-to-day operations, including fundraising, volunteer organizing, and special committee assignments and tasks. Parents are encouraged to actively volunteer on various committees, supporting school facilities and other essential activities.

Our Programs

We offer a comprehensive preschool program that introduces children to educator-led activities, including a variety of fine and gross motor activities and circle time, with ample opportunities to explore various learning stations for independent learning. Our program is designed to help children realize their potential through a variety of daily activities.

Toddler Program

Our toddler program introduces our students to the type of activities they will see in preschool. They will learn social skills, arts and crafts, sensory play, and circle time, a nice introduction to preschool. The program runs 2 mornings per week on Tuesday and Thursday.

Preschool Program

Our preschool program is offered three mornings/afternoons per week—Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—from 9:00 to 11:30 AM and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12:30 to 3:00 PM. A flexible option is also available for one or two of the days for families who want to ease children into the program.

Our Community

Located at 3529 McBean Street in Richmond, RCNS has been a valued member of the community for five decades. Our longevity is a testament to our commitment to providing quality early childhood education and fostering a sense of community among our families.
